DirectX 9.0 is required for both Vista and XP.

Dale,

Do you think it could be a direct-x problem? It seems strange that both audio and video are affected. Sure glad both my Toshiba's are workin' good. Knock on wood...

Anything is possible especially with Vista, but I think we are dealing with more than one problem. It may be a permissions thing with Vista and all the locked down security. It is hard to troubleshoot something like this without being able to see for yourself exactly what is going on.

Dolly,

Probably draw another blank, but go to the folder where your KMA files are stored and right click on one of them.

What does it tell you the size of the KMA track is? Average should be around 3 to 4 Mg (approx) at 128 compression..

Also make for sure that in the ATTRIBUTES at the bottom of the page READ ONLY and HIDDEN are UNCHECKED.

I don't know how old your laptop is or how up to date it is.
Has it got .NET Framework 2.0, DIRECTX9
Perhaps it might be worthwhile downloading and installing this little free program that conducts a complete Audit of your PC.
I have it installed on all my machines and it is very enlightning
Here is the link if you want to give it a go:

a couple more questions

First of all be sure and get the info George asked about a couple of posts back.

My questions:
What were the kma's made from IE imported from disk or converted from mp3g or something different?
Also when you place the song in the playlist what type of file does it say it is in the "Type" column IE CDCDG or HDZIP. In the duration column does the time showing appear to be accurate? and start counting down when you play the file?
Does the status column turn green and read "play" when you try to play the file?
Can you play video clips using the video tab to add them to your playlist (note: These won't show in the KJ screen, only in the singers screen).
Can you add and play an mp3 or wma from the the audio tab?
Can you import a track directly to the playlist from a disk using the CDG tab?

Dolly,
I see a major problem is the security updates that haven't been done, which tells me you haven't done the Custom update from Microsoft and as part of that no NetFrame which creates another user account (ASPNET).
What version of Windows Media Player is installed on this laptop?

It looks like Dale has hit on your problem. You must do those critical updates. Not to beat a dead horse, but that was mentioned in a very early post to this. Another thing is that Norton Security uses a lot of resources to run. There are free programs that will protect you computer without using so many resources. The first thing I did with both of my laptops was to remove Norton completely and install AVG Free Edition. Of course this is a matter of opinion. To run a show you will need to disable Norton and other background programs. I also disable my internet connection so that I know the copmputer is safe from any outside attack. The Hoster Help Manual has a large list of things to check. I printed it and went through it step by step. It is pretty much written for Windows XP, but you can still find the majority of the items in Vista. If you have not gone through the manual and done all you microsoft updates, then you have the folks who are trying to help beating their heads against the wall for nothing.

dhkluesner@clas can play audio (mp3/wma) and video clips through Hoster, but KMA's (at least CDCDG types and CDG) will not.

All specs are similiar to my Vista laptop, audio and display specs are exactly the same as mine.
Hoster worked perfect on mine right out of the box back in February, so I don't think it's an update issue.

I'm out of ideas but it seems strange that Hoster will play everything but KMA's?

I can't thank you all enough

Ok, kma files are mostly 3-4 mb with about 30% more than that. In the attributes section there is no read only or other, just kma info.

For assurance purposes, I went through mtu's disable features. The only one I couldn't figure out on vista was how to disable show windows content features. Everything else was right on target.

Windows is update and has been since the beginning. I run an update daily.

I want to thank all of you for your help. I know that me and my problem are very frustrating.

That answers two of the three questions.

1-You can access the folder where the KMA files are stored, so Vista has not made it a hidden folder and denied you and Hoster access.

2-The files are within normal range and probably aren't corrupted.

3-I don't use Vista and didn't realize they had changed the attributes info.

Regarding your updates, do you use EXPRESS or CUSTOM install? If you've been using EXPRESS, try doing a CUSTOM install, as Dale made reference to early on. There are some updates that companies software requires, that Microsoft doesn't deem important, that you will get with CUSTOM install if you take everything. I'm bringing it back up because it's important, and in all the hassle you could have easily missed it.
