Search Preview Hoster 4.09d

I downloaded and installed Hoster 4.09d a few weeks ago. Today is the first time I tried the new search preview feature using two sound cards. I was listening to a song playing in the playlist, searched for a song and selected it then hit the preview button. It worked fine but when I either closed the window or hit stop, I got an error message that said something like Runtime error. So and so has to terminate so and so in an unusual manner, Hoster must close. I shut the computer down and rebooted and tried again. It would not do a preview. I did everything the same but no sound and no preview screen. Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks

George

P.S. This is the best version of Hoster since 3.4!!!!!!!!!

I believe this is a Hoster bug. I tried it again and this time, I stopped the song from playing by hitting the red stop button and then closed the window. It worked fine. I then did it again but this time instead of stopping the song first, I closed the window. I got the Hoster shutdown message. The workaround is just to hit the stop button on the preview song before closing the window but I still believe this is a bug. Can anyone duplicate this?

George

I've had problems with that every once in a while on microstudio that would occur on one computer but no other. If you check your event viewer reports I think you'll find it a problem with either dot net (I can't remember the official name for it) or a dll file. Nothing I tried would make it go away. At some point, after a Windows update session i think, the problem went away on it's own.

I dont have extra soundcards at home but I'll try and check at my gig tomorrow.

Sam

I'll check the event viewer just to see. I must not have the version of microstudio that uses two sound cards as I can't remember doing this. If it is there, I've never used it or tried to use it.

Thanks

Hey George,
In Microstudio you have the ability to choose which sound card you record with (Tools > Record Settings > Select Card). Because I only have one sound card on my test machine, I'm not sure if it changes the output card that Micostudio uses but it seems that it would have to.

I think what Sam is getting at is he saw the same errors you did while selecting diferent sound cards to record with. Since he mentioned Windows custom updates have you done all of them except for the hardware updates? (On time I did the harware updates from Windows custom updates and it caused my sound card to stop working. I had to use system restore to get it working again.)

I did all the updates before I installed 4.06 and it was on a fresh install of the OS. To be honest, I had some problems with 4.06 but they were not the same. They were not bad enough that I could not use it. I would get the Hoster shutdown error for no apparent reason etc. occasionally. I even changed video cards from an ATI Radeon 9800 with 128 mgs of onboard memory to an Nvidia with 256 mgs of on board memory. The Nvidia card was worse that the ATI with less memory. I finally caught on to something Dale said about his screen resolution setting and changed mine and that took care of most all the problems I was having. I was still having problems with slow, slow, slow, slow imports of CDG disks. Not importing to the playlist but to the database. I would revert to 3.40 to do that. Since I installed 4.09d, it has worked flawlessly except for this hoster shutdown while closing the window in search preview before stopping the song. I remember a while back that there was an issue such as this in another area of Hoster and the work around was to hit the stop button first. That was ultimately fixed. I have not listed the specifics of my computer yet but they are as follows:

1. 965 Socket 2.8 Ghertz Intel Processor
2. 2 Gigs of Memory
3. ATI Radeon 9800 AGP Video card w/128Mgs onboard memory
4. External Extigy USB Soundcard
5. Internal Phillips PSA Ultimate Sound Card
6. Onboard AC97 Sound Card
7. 600 Watt Antec Power Supply
8. All updates except hardware on fresh OS Install (XP Pro w/SP3) before instaling Hoster 4.06
9. Made all suggested changes as per MTU
10. EliteGroup P4M800PRO-M Motherboard
11. Plextor PX-850 CD/DVD burner/player
12. System OS on Serial ATA Raid Controler 0 Drive 1 set as IDE
13. System Cloned on Serial ATA Raid Controler 0 Drive 0 set as IDE
14. Two separate IDE Drives for Hoster/Music files
15. Data drives cloned on two more internal drives.

There are a total of 6 drives on this machine. Everything backed up to the max.

With 4.09d I'm now able to import to the database from a CDG in approximately 8 minutes. I imported three disks this morning and timed it. (Awesome) I am very happy with 4.09d and I don't need to preview karaoke songs but I just thought I'd pass along what I thought was a bug. I can't believe no one has had this problem. If that is the case and everyone is using it, it must be something in my system but I don't think so.

George, great diagnosing. You are correct, there was a bug. With your details we were led right to the offending code. It turns out we were "destroying" the Search window when the Close button was clicked. However, if a song was playing, it would return to access a variable that was "destroyed", and thus get a pointer into la la land.

It was an easy fix, which will go out this week for Beta Testing, and be released in Hoster 4.10 which we are on full bore right now.

Again, great reporting!

I was hoping it was becuase I did not want to have to chase down a problem on my system which I felt was really working well. As I said before, this is for me, by far, the best version on Hoster since 3.4. You finally have it pretty well nailed down. I was very skeptical about the import from CDG but when I imported three disks this morning and it took about 8 minutes each, I was estatic. I used the audio and video files feature last week at my show. It worked flawlessly and usually my show starts at around 7:00 PM but I am always set up around noon. This meant that I was running Hoster from around Noon until 11:00 PM. NO CRASHES OR BLIPS WHATSOEVER!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!! Thanks so much!
