Is she closing down Hoster before she shuts down the comuter? Try hitting "alt" "ctrl" "delete" keys to bring up task manager. Shut the program down from there to see if it truly is Hoster that is not responding. After that, you can randomly close programs until you find the culprit. The worst you can do is cause you system to freeze and have to do a power button reset like she is already doing. If it is Hoster you can try the options at the top of Hoster and set the priority to normal and try again. The only problem with that solution is you might experience pauses or lags when you do anything except run Hoster. If you do, reset it to a higher priority.

it's not mine, it's a friend's system, from what she told me she doesnt use her laptop except to run hoster, i believe her cause there's nothing, no icons on her laptop except hoster, ie and whatever programs mtu put on her laptop when she bought it, and yes she closes hoster before she shuts down her laptop, and yes we tried alt. cont. del.and she still get's the same msg..keeps popping up. |

That is strange but not that strange, pc love em or hate em. First thing I would do is go on line and see if any upgrades for her pc is available. Next upgrade the windows media player. I had my pc a rackmount from MTU start shutting down when using the media player, after 4 years of use. Went on line and upgraded the player and checked for XP upgrades all is well again.

Sorry Billyo, I haven't had time to check back here in a couple of days. Without setting in front of the computer, I can only guess at what it might be. What I know for sure is that Windows is not releasing the memory at the time SOME program should close. I say some because it does not necessarily involve Hoster. Even though you might get an error message that indicates Hoster, there are instances that the message is incorrect.
It can be caused by a corrupt swap file involving windows management of the swap file. This can be caused by a failing hard disk, or failing memory, or just Windows in general. Sometimes running the updates for Windows does nothing more than shuffle addresses around and may fix the problem as a side effect. Sometimes you really DO need the updates to Windows or your hardware. This is where I would start. After that, I would change the size and or location of windows swap file. Then I would start on hardware. Run a disk checker or other diagnostic tools. If the laptop has 2 sticks of memory in it, I would remove one then try it then switch out chips and try it again. Then switch positions or try some other memory if available. Lastly, If it were me,I would probably do nothing. I have a laptop with the same symptoms. It doesn't bother me a bit. I keep a backup of the data, and a backup unit is available. I assume if the problem doesn't get better, it will get worse. If it gets worse, it will be easier to find the problem and I won't waste the time trying to track down what, at the end of the day, is no big deal. |
