I did something stupid

I have two routes with two independent systems. Due to the distance between us we buy disks independently and once every few months we “synchronize”. Since it has been quite a while I decided to try to merge the files. I installed his hard drive (USB) in addition to mine and used the merge option to attempt to import his songs into my hard drive. What in fact happened is his songs merged into the song book but remained on his hard drive and were not imported. In my infinite stupidity I copied his songs directory into mine, assuming that duplicates would be ignored. What I ended up with was a mix match of songs verses songbook data and I ended up deleting the songs directory and restoring it from the backup. Now I am back to square one with my original problem/question. Can I import kma data between two hard drives or is it best to just load the disks one at a time every few months?

You did this slightly backwards. The Merge KMA Files command is a bit misleading. What it is actually doing is Merging the records in the database to prevent duplicate BookIDs. When a duplicate is encountered it changes the incoming ID to a new one.
You need to copy the songs to your directory (and it should ask you if you want to overwrite the old one). Then run the Merge KMA Files, but list only your directory as the source. This way all the "new" files will be incorporated into your database.

I hope you know you have to have an original copy for every song you have loaded. So if you and your partner are not buying two copies each time then what you are doing is not legal. You can not run two shows without having two originals.

Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear enough. We do have two independent copies of each disk but in my old age I am getting too lazy to load them twice. What I was trying to do is load the disks once in one machine then copy the kma files to the other every few months. If the only legal way is to load them individually that is what I will continue to do. Last thing I need is guys with no neck coming to visit.

You do not have to import them on each machine. The only question on legality was the way you stated it in your first post. Follow the directions I gave in post #2 and you should have no problems with importing from one or the other computer and blending the two lists.
The way I do it is I do all my importing from my home desktop computer then carry a copy of the added KMA files to my show machine by memory stick or usb hard drive. That way I keep a master copy safe at home in case I have to reload.

Just copy the NEW KMA's to your HD.

If B O T H computers have the SAME BookIDs for ALL the KMAs, then copy the SONGS.MDB as well.

If you have DIFFERENT BookIDs, then, after copying the KMAs, REBUILD the DB and ask your partner to PRINT an UPDATE List for your SongBook.

My solution gives an added answer on how you would UPDATE your SongBook.

If you don't know how to determine what a NEW KMA is or if you do not know what and where the Songs.MDB is or is located or if you do not know how to determine if BOTH KMA libraries have the SAME BookIDs...disregard this advice.
