buy hoster and make sure before you install your computer is up to date with windows updates. your computer must support dual display if you want a seperate monitor for the singer. you can run your computer through your home stereo with a plug from Radio Shack.

as far as music goes just Google CDG or Karaoke. i even think walmart has music. you can import the music into your computer or just play from the disks. its better to import them and easier.

I'm responding based on your statment of "this weekend". I'm assuming a birthday or other party that is your "deadline".

What we hear from MANY who bought an "el-cheapo" hardware system from Target, Wal-Mart, etc. is within months (sometimes weeks) they are broken... ESPECIALLY if the kids are allowed to use it. Also, kids will destroy CDG disc quickly by handling them! You DO NOT want to scratch a master CDG disc as the lyrics will be damaged. Frankly, we never recommend this direction based on the experience of others who call us.

Our Microstudio software ($39.95) is able to import songs from Karaoke CDG discs to the hard drive on your computer and let you play them in any order. You can also play directly from the discs, but importing makes play start instantly, and you don't keep handling your discs. You will need a CDR or DVD burner that can import the CDG disc format. Hoster is better for running professional class karaoke shows, but it is $99.99, which is a bit pricy for home use.

Now, if you want to make your own songs, consider our Karaoke Suite 4 ($149.95), which gives you 2 of our programs for free:

1. Microstudio software (import, play, burn custom discs, backup discs)
2. Karaoke Home Producer (make your own songs with sweeping lyrics)
3. Vogone (vocal reducer to reduce vocals from audio CD songs)
4. Keyrite (key change either audio or karaoke files with lyrics already in them)

This can give you and your family a lot of milage together.

Karaoke CDG discs can be found lots of places (try Google, eBay, Karaoke.com, etc.), depending on the songs you want to sing. Expect to pay about $10 to $20 a disc, with 10 to 15 (sometimes more) songs per disc. These make you legal. Microstudio also allows you to make backup copies to protect your masters (requires CDR blank media and a CD/DVD Burner that can write CDG discs).

Frankly, since you are in a home environment, I wouldn't even consider worrying about a microphone and recording with this tight a deadline. Just play the karaoke "backing music" with the lyrics sweeping, and have fun! Too much technology can get in the way.

We are working on a major upgrade of Microstudio that will hopefully be released in October that can use almost any CD/DVD drive (your computer probably has one now) for importing and writing karaoke CDG discs and tracks. I wish I had it right now; it would be ideal for your needs.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Hey cbr929pilot
Using MTU you can get away with microstudio 2.613, a cdg player, check out compatible Plextor types on this site and a cheap mike.
You can probably find an earlier Plextor drive on Ebay, as the older ones, still perfectly acceptable, are going for a (karaoke) song.
As previously pointed out Hoster is for the more professional or serious karaoke buff.
Anyone on this site will, however ,tell you it's a bug that gets under your skin so I don't suppose it will be too long before you want to do a lot more.
I have sent you an e-mail with a couple of suggestions for midi music for your PC
Regards from across the pond.
Garry.

Hey cbr929pilot,
As far as CDG discs are concerned I used www.doowop.com, some discs are as cheap as $6-7 and they now do Proburn all with free shipping in mainland US all licensed.
They regularly sell off job lots on Ebay for peanuts, which is a good place to search for bargain discs anyway.
Incidentally Proburn is cheaper here in the UK but you'd have to assess the shipping costs in relation to what you'd save on the discs.
Regards from across the pond.
Garry

Hey, thanks for letting us know.

What software did you go with?

Don't forget, now you can do it again for a great New Years also!
