Cool USB drives-standard or portable

I have lost 2 usb drives recently. One due to overheating (apparently leaving it on too long) and another due to my not protecting it enough from moving while in my rack system. I did not realize they were as fragile as they are-we learn by doing right?

Anyway, the portable drives are only 5200 rpm vs the 7200 rpm of the standard drives. Would this be a major impact on the search and load feature as I use the usb as my primary source-have no kma's on my laptop at all.

Western Digital Passport
80GB Portable USB Drive

5400 RPM 2.5" 2mb Buffer

Thanks for any advice.

Re: USB drives-standard or portable

I haven't had any trouble with any of mine. I have three. All mine are 7,200rpm and 8mb cashe. Also, are you using usb 1 or usb 2. Usb 1 isn't nearley as fast as usb 2.

Re: USB drives-standard or portable

There must be a reason why a top brand like Seagate has five year warranties their inboard hard drives, but still only one year on their USB drives.

I'd imagine part of it would be to anticipated user abuse of the USB's.

Anyway that's what tipped me to go Seagate inboards for clone backup's instead of USB's.

George i think it is because the usb are not in side your unit
and they tend to get droped more often .

just a guess on my part.

Re: USB drives-standard or portable

No doubt about it, Mike, but the 5yr. warranty on the inboards sure is attractive even if all other factors were even.

Take care,

George

Re: USB drives-standard or portable

I have been using Firelite self powered USB 60GB drives for my laptop, 1 as a spare. So far, they have been great. It runs cool and doesn't need the extra cable and power supply. I have also supplied several to friends with Ipods to store there mp3's on. So far, so good.
