Re: hoster shutdown

The same thing happened to me one night. I was afraid to import while a singer was singing after that, which caused a delay when I would import between songs. I don't recall what brand it was.

Re: hoster shutdown

The only glitch I've had while importing from a singer's disk was when the song currently playing was also one that was imported from disk. When I did this, the music kept going but the on-screen lyrics froze for about 20 seconds. When it "un-froze", they were at the right spot and everything was back to normal. I've been leary to attempt this again, trying only to load a song from CD when a .kma song is playing. Anyone else experience this? Again, I don't know if it was a one-time glitch or something that would consistently happen.

Re: hoster shutdown

Well, I didn't have a chance to try importing a singer's disc again while playing a song. This time at my show while a singer was singing, my entire computer screen went black and my computer shutdown. On top of that, I could never get the computer to turn back on. I was back to flipping discs all night. Yikes! I keep having trouble. When I got home, I tried out the laptop and geez, it powered up and worked just fine. Must have been another ghost!

Re: hoster shutdown

I hadn't been running more than an hour at the most when my pc shut down. I doubt if it was a heat problem. If a key stuck, I wouldn't know. Everything worked fine once home and I have no idea why it happened. Any other ideas?

Re: hoster shutdown

I had a similar experience about 6 weeks ago and when I checked the singers disc it was marked and dirty. Could an unreadable disc be the problem ?

Re: hoster shutdown

The singer had been singing a song that was from my kma songs database. It was not a singer's disc, so can't be that. Someone here at work suggested that my AC power may not have been plugged in all the way and I may have been running off battery power, which could have run out. I really thought I checked all the cables when this happened, but it's hard to know now what might have happened.

Cool Re: hoster shutdown

Hello Nitecat,

Well if you go to "Start\Settings\Control Panel\Power Options" then on the "Advanced" tab and check the "Always show icon on taskbar" You will be able to see if your running on AC Power ot the battery.

Best,

Roger

Re: hoster shutdown

Could the vents be getting blocked at your gig where as there not at home? On my laptop (which I don't use for karaoke) there's only about a 1/4" clearence between the exhaust fan on the bottom and the table. If this gets blocked you can over heat, same with the intake vents on the side. It might not be a bad idea to rest the laptop on a couple of short pieces of 1x2 to make it easier for the computer exhaust excess heat.

I use two shuttles that sit in my equip rack, and the only time I had problems like you describe I discovered I forgot to open the back of the rack to let out exhausted hot air.

Heat is a mortal enemy of electronics, even if the heat is not sufficient to cause the item to shutdown it will over time cause components to fail prematurly , which is why you'll find that many businesses that have a "computer room" air condition it to the point of being uncomfortably cold.

Another possibility is a bad power supply. One of my shuttles would shutdown and try to reboot at totally random times, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 5 hours and sometimes after 2 weeks. I struggled with this for several months untill I replaced the power supply and have'nt had a problem since (about 8 months now).

Hope this helps.
Sam

Your computer can overhead within minutes if the air vents get blocked. An hour is MORE than enough time to overheat. Also, until it cooled back down overheating would probably prevent the computer from restarting.

Make sure you keep your air vents open....

Re: hoster shutdown

I have run this laptop for Hoster using the exact same setup for 4-5 hours at a time with no problems before. Based on all of your suggestions, I will consider raising the laptop somehow so it's guaranteed to have good airflow underneath. Thanks for all of the advice. This forum is great. It's nice how everyone seems to come to one's rescue.

Re: hoster shutdown

Another thought. Note the time these things happen and go to start/control panel/administrative tools/event viewer. Maybe your computer will tell you whats going on.
