Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
I am helping a friend with his laptop. He had another friend put some songs in Hoster and not knowing how to put some of them in Hoster, he put them on an external hard drive. Then he started loading more songs on the laptop internal hard drive.
I want to move them to the Desktop from the hard drive so he can use the hard drive for backup only and not have to have it connected at all. Is it possible to put them in a folder on the desktop and redirect Hoster to the folder without reloading all of the songs (~2,500 songs).

Re: Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
Yes you can either copy or move them to the the C/drive. I would use copy myself and then delete them afterwoods once I know everything is OK.
Once they are all on the C/ drive you will have to use the rebuild database function. Presuming this is version 4.32. From the tools tab select "Songs Database" in the next dialog are 2 options, select "Rebuild" on the next screen delete the folder that pointed to your external hard drive and any folders that don't have any of your current songs in. Now use the "Add Folder" button and navigate to your new folder, make sure you see the list of files in that folder then press select. Now check that the list of folders showing in the rebuild dialog is listing all the ones with your music in and press "Rebuild Songs Database" It can take a little while depending on how many songs you have.

Re: Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
Roy,
Thanks! I will try this tonight... I felt like there was a way to do this, but haven't had the need to do it before now. I will let you know how it turns out... Again, Thanks!

Re: Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
Roy,
I did as you suggested and now I've got a bigger problem! The only songs that are on the internal hard drive now is these songs that I moved. All songs loaded before this rebuild have disappeared as if they never existed. Yes, this is Hoster 4.32...

Re: Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
When you use the rebuild function you have to have all the folders present in the list that contain your music.
So you have to have the folders listed that were originally on his internal hard drive as well as the new folder that you moved from his external. Quote:
If you don't know yourself I suggest you use windows search option and search his C/ drive for .kma first then search again for .kmh This should find these folders if they are still on the hard drive. One other point, when you navigate to a folder using the Rebuild/Add Folder option, be sure to open the folder so that the list of songs show in the open window before pressing the select button. If you just navigate to the folder and just highlight it, then you are only selecting the previous folder. When you use the rebuild function it always creates a backup of the previous data base. Now if you have only done 1 rebuild it is possible to restore the original database and start again. To do this open C/MTU/Hoster and look for "Songs-backup.mdb" & Songs.mdb. Now rename Songs.mdb to Songs2.mdb and rename Songs-backup.mdb to Songs.mdb then start Hoster and your original database should be restored. Then if all is OK I should copy this songs.mdb file to a safe place on your computer, the desk top will do untill you find you have managed to get your original task completed OK.

Re: Moving Files From An External Hard Drive...
Roy,
Thanks! That did the trick... I didn't know that I had to do the Hoster/KMA files also in addition to the folder on the Desktop I wanted to add... Everything is back to normal now! Again, thanks a lot!!!
