Hoster shuts down my computer

everytime I use the edit songs comand in Hoster and hit the button "Apply changes", my computer abruptly shuts down. This started all of a sudden. I have reinstalled the program but that did not correct the problem. Does anybody have a thought on this?

How is it shutting down? Do you get a Blue Screen error message or does it imediately automatically shutdown and restart?
What version of Hoster and what operating system?
If you get a blue screen write down what the error is and post it here along with above information.
If it automatically shutsdown and restarts follow the next procedure then run Hoster again to make it crash again.

1. Click Window's Start button at the bottom left
2. Click Settings in the menu
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click the mouse left button on System near the bottom of the list
5. In the dialog that appears, click Advanced Tab
6. In the Startup and Recovery group, click the Settings button
7. In the System Failure group, if the Automatically restart checkbox is checked , then click it so it is NOT checked
8. Click all the OK buttons to close out of this dialog, and accept your changes.

My screen just goes black. No blue screen. I have to push the computer start button and it reboots in its regular fashion. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running xp media edition. Hoster is the lastest release.

Did 4.06 do this or 4.07?
Do you have all the Custom Updates from Microsoft installed?
This has not come up before. Blue screen crashing the computer or just crashing Hoster yes, but never seen anything about it locking up the computer.
If we analize this the Apply function would call the first file, open it, rewrite the header and save it. Have you been trying to do this to the same exact file or group of files? If so try using another file to edit and see if it will go through.

Check for virus in your computer. It happened to me a couple of weeks ago and all of a sudden I have virus.

Thanks for your replies. I have the latest updated installed. I tried a backup copy of my database and got the same results. The second I hit apply changes, it beeps and the screen goes black. It acts like it has shut down. I have to restart computer and wait for all that start up crap. I looked at the event log but nothing is recorded there, I guess it happens to fast to record. I'm at wits end with this. I have run registery cleaners, virus scans but nothing seems to help. I can delete files and as far as I can tell, use all the other functions of the program. The problem is when I try to edit a song and apply the change.

If this is a version 4.xxx . Try loading Hoster 34 which comes with all versions of 4.xx and see if it works with that version. Let us know.

Is this a laptop or desktop?
Is it XP or Vista?
Do you have Hybernate or Standby set?
Have you tried hitting any key to see if it will come back?

I have stand-by active, hybernate is inactive. This is a labtop Dell Inspiron 9300 with XP. Nothing will revive except restart button.

Agreed.

And if all else fails try restoring your computer back to a time that you know it worked correctly.

It sounds like the standby is maybe being triggered by this. Have you tried hitting any keys on the keyboard when this happens? Try turning the standby off and see if that stops the black screen.

You still haven't told us which Hoster you are running, and also which Windows.

Hoster is not causing this. Something in your computer is broke.

Do a System Restore (find out from the Hoster manual topic on installation changes for XP or Vista) back to a known good point.

It shows you have version 4.06a installed, and we have never had this problem reported with that version. Please updated to version 4.08 to see if it does the same thing, and as stated above, try version 3.400 to see if it also does this.

Here is how to run Version 3.400.

NOTE: Hoster 3.400 was also installed with Hoster 4.0. This is located at C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster\Hoster34.exe - This version is the same as Hoster 3.321 which was the last stable version before releasing 4.0. If you have any problems you can run this version if you need to, without having to uninstall version 4.0. It was built with the same security as a backup if you experience any problems. You can also make a short cut to this if you need.

Also, are you files on an External hard drive or on the C: drive?

Also, try running an electric fan infront of the computer, perhap something is heating in it, causing it to shut down prematurely.

Good call. That was what I thought. The combination of the Hard Drive, and increased CPU usage probably overheated it. Even if the fan doesn't work, a good cleaning sure can't hurt. I have one that is a pain to clean (have to take out the keyboard to get to 1 screw) but it is required a couple of times a year.

I thought about this and tried to get inside to clean but after removing all the screws I could find, I still could not remove the bottom or top cover. Does anybody know to open up a Dell Inspiron 9300 to the point where it can be cleaned?

I think you are in dangerous territory here. I have been doing this stuff for 40+ years and I still cringe if I have to open up a laptop. Your best bet would be to take it to a professional and ask them to clean it and check it out. It may cost you a bit but it will be a small price compared to having to replace the laptop because you messed it up.

i agree with Dale, i would not touch or try taking the keyboard off, those hinges are fragile . the only thing i would touch or take off is the hhd cover, anything else..no no..

It does cause a certain bit of apprehension to disassemble a laptop. I use my digital camera and take pics along the way.
