Want to check external hard drive

Does anyone know how to check an external hard drive? I found some instructions to go to Start, Run, type CHKDSK /F. I tried it but it checked the internal hard drive in my computer. My hard drive is "L", so what should I type in RUN?

Double click on My Computer icon on desktop. Find the L drive and right click on it. Go to Properties. Click on Tools Tab and the top item is Check disk. You can also defrag from here if needed.
