Vista Basic vs Premium 3.315

Vista may be compliant with the basic version but not premium. You can not run the database from an external hard drive, only the laptops hard drive.
Does anybody else find this to be true? I submitted a supportr ticket a few days ago. However I have had no response from them. Can anybody help?

What do you mean by running the database from the external drive? Do you have Hoster installed on the internal drive or the external? Tell us exactly what you did step by step.

The program is installed on the laptop.

Just replaced stolen laptop with Hp with Vista Home Premium. Purchased a new Hoster Program on Feb 21st. Program installed ok. When running Build Database, it goes through the processing song db counting 35231. When it completes, it tells me, successfully created 0 entry songs.mdb. Tried several times. No go. Then tried putting one KMA file in another directory, went through the process for that file. It worked but will not work trying to load the 35231 files. ?????????????
What to do?
I've tried to uninstall program and reinstall, same problem.

I found one of the problems. It will only work if the KMA files are on the laptop not an external drive. I tried different externals and the same thing.

This is an external Hard Drive, right? Is it USB or Firewire?

Thanks, but the drive letter is F and when trying to build database, I've selected F.
I believe there is a problem with Hoster working properly with Vista Premium. They claim they tested only basic since it is the most common.
When I put 17,000 KMA files on the laptops hard drive, then when I went to direct it to the songs folder under Micro Technology, the folder wasn't there like it normally is. I created it. It worked fine.
When I directed it to the F drive, it went through all the motions (about a half hour) it had 0 entries.

We're talking basic operation with external USB drives here. This is not something that would be different between version levels of the O/S so wouldn't require testing on each level. I would venture to say if you had Vista basic you would still have the same problem.
This sounds like a permissions problem with either the external drive or the songs database file. Is your database file set to default location or did you change it to store the songs.mdb file on the external drive?

I changed it to the F drive like I have done at least a 100 times over the past 3 years. I can put the hard drive on another laptop with XP and no problem.

XP may not have as many restrictions or different restrictions.
Check the file properties (right click then properties). Make sure it isn't read only and that the user you are logged in with has full security permissions.
Have you tried setting the location of the songs.mdb file to the default location (Hoster\databases) and then rebuild from KMA files on F See if you get the same results of 0 files.

What I think is happening is that the search part of the build/rebuild database function is working since it tells you there are 35,xxx files and it counts down from there. The problem is something is preventing the information from being written to the songs.mdb file.

Hi,

The files were read only. I changed that but it still doesn't work. I noticed when it's going through the counting process, the light on the hard drive doen't show activity at all. I tried a different hard drive and it doesn't show activity.
When I try to cancel the progress, it won't cancel. I have to start task manager and manually stop it.
Makes no sense to me.
My Virtual Dj program has no problem reading the hard drive and building the database for the DJ MP3's. That works fine. That's why I feel it's the Hoster program. Make Sense?

Something similar happened to my Dad while using XP. He did a merge - even though it was only 1 directory, then build database out of the same directory & all seemed to work fine.

I want to thank all of you who tried to help me out on this matter. You guys are great.

There must be an issue between Vista and Hoster.
No matter what hard drive I use, PCDJ, Virtual DJ, Atomix MP3, Music Match and Windows Media Player all build databases and play with no problem using the external drive. Only Hoster doesn't read the external drive properly.
I completely restored the laptop to factory condition and installed all the updates from Microsoft. Installed all my DJ programs. Went to reinstall the Hoster program. It asked me for registration number like it was installed for the first time.
All the DJ programs built the databases and ran fine. The Hoster had the same problem. It will only work if the KMA file are on the laptops hard drive. That would be fine but the hard drive is a 120 gig drive. The KMA files are 174 gigs.
My only option at this point is to return the laptop and try to find a new laptop with XP.

With the array of OTHER programs, you, obviously, don't have the RIGHT program and support for Vista.

Here is an excerpt from a Program and a PROGRAMMER that knows a little something about Vista.

Quote:
Taking control of an external drive under Windows Vista®

Windows Vista® by default will set the security of an external or removable drive so tight that programs that need to rename, edit or delete files are rendered virtually useless. Here are the steps to take control of an external drive so that programs running on Windows Vista® will have the complete control they need:
and here is a LINK to FIX the problem with your EXTERNAL DRIVE controlled by VISTA:

See if this helps

Thanks for the info. I already talked to Microsoft and they had me do just what the link said to do. However it didn't work. Thanks for your help.
I think it's great that so many people try to help each other out in these forums.

I have ordered a new version of Windows Vista, that should demonstrate this problem, it will be here in the morning and then I will load it on a system to test with.
