Static Noise

I wasn't sure where to post this, well here goes:

I had problems with my laptop (hp, 512mb ram 3.2 P4 hyperthread CPU)producing loud static.

So, I replaced it with an HP, 1gb ram ,duo core 2.1 centrino. Still have the same problem just as loud. When I use my amp and/or non-powered mixer or straight in to the Amp. Using either with the onboard sound or an iMIC usb sound device.

I have tried different combinations of equipment to ensure it wasn't the amp or the mixer adding the noise.

When I unplug the power cord on the laptop I remove all the noise and it's quiet. (same happened on the original laptop)

I read an old thread that mentioned somethiing about a ground loop (grd loop what?)

I'm not a pro KJ but use hoster, it's just a hobbie for use at home or family functions.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks in advance.
Bob

you can lift the ground by using a three prong to two prong adapter when you plug in your laptop.
i use a power strip and lift the ground on that and plug everything into the strip. even though it is not recomended it has always worked for me.Bob

Bob,
Do you use a three-to-two prong plug at the end of your laptop cord AND at the end of the strip as well?

I had the same problem about a year ago. In two differant places I play. One club I pluged into another outlet, and that took care of it.
In the Bar I was having the same problem. I ended up useing a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter on the computer and that took it out. You might try that.
Does it do all the time it's pluged into the outlet? Anywhere you play or just certin ones>

Larry

I quess Bob and I were typing a responce at the same time. Well, we both said about the same thing.

Are you using the same power supply/cord for both laptops? If so try changing to the other one. It could be noisy filter capacitors in the power supply instead of a ground loop. For safety sake I would check this first, then if it still is noisy do as they suggest and use an adapter.

Both the power cord and laptop are brand new...I tried it in another outlet in the house ...same result. I am going to a friends house tonight and try it there...he also uses a laptop (different brand) and experiences no noise. To add I don't get the problem with my desktop...(different outlet, same ckt) I'll let all of you know later how I made out at my friends house.

thanks

Ok, here's what happened....The noise was less at my friends and using the two prong adapter removed the hum that was present. I took the adapter home with me and tried it. It worked..amazing..the noise I experienced at home was like crumbling celphane paper. It removed all of the noise...
thanks for the suggestions ..Bob

I would caution you guys lifting the grounds. it can cause a computer to fail. This is the correct way to fix it. http://www.musicinstruments.ws/det/3...um-Filter.html
