Here is another one

Thanks for your answer, I will try that. Something else unrelated to hoster program if anyone wants to take a shot at it. I have backed up my DJ drive which is G to my backup which is E, both externals, a couple of times now using the copy this file task on my computer, and keep having a problem. I have about 13,000 DJ Song or about 65 Gigs. Somewhere during the copy process it will stop and come up with a cyclic redundancy error. I then have to go through a process to find where I was and skip that file and then continue process. Doing this I am however losing a handful of songs everytime I backup as it is always a different song, and if I try to copy it over even as a single file same thing. It is however fine at the source as far as playing, but if anything happened to that drive it would not be on my backup.... what to do.....???????? Thanks again.

Run Chkdsk on the drive. The CRC is how the processor verifies the data received from the drive is correct. If the code doesn't match the data then you get an error. Chkdsk will determine if the sector the data is in is faulty and move the data if it is. Sometimes all data can be recovered sometimes not.

If this is happening frequently your hard drive may be dying and need to be replaced.

I had the same thing happen when moving kma files to a backup hard drive. Then just as Dale said the hard drive went out. I then ran a hard drive recovery program and recovered most of the files. I had all the disc's so I was able to reimport all that were not recovered.

Is there any difference at all between "ghostimg" a drive and simply copying the whole thing elsewhere?

ghosting clones the hard drive to another hard drive. so if the original hard drive fails, all you have to do is put the cloned hard drive in its place and your up and running in about 10 minutes.

it clones everything, windows on down the line.

I see, but do you really need to have the "Norton Ghost" product or is it the exact same thing as
typing in: Copy C:\ to another drive.

At the end of every work session, say creating new CDG's with KHP, I always copy and paste the new files into the proper folder of my back-up drive.

The same with any deletions, I delete them from the back-updrive as I go along.

This saves a lot of cloning back and forth, and in the event of a lost drive, both drives are fully functional and up to date.

I caught a virus on my c: a couple of weeks ago, immediately cloned d: to c: and was clean again with no hassle. The program wipes the target hard drive clean as it makes the transfer.

I wouldn't be without Norton Ghost. As Beavis mentioned it also replaces Windows, which simply copying one drive to another won't do.

One thing to consider if you go that route, Seagate, an old well respected drive mfgr, is currently offering a 5 yr. warranty on their inboard drives, vs. a standard 1 yr. warranty on USB's. Portability is not a factor with me.

Bryan if the drive in question contains program files (ie. C then you should use Norton Ghost to "image" the drive. This gives you a way to instantly restore in case of a crash or as George said a virus attack. Problematic side of that is you must "back-up" often, but is well worth the time and money. The first time your system crashes Norton Ghost will pay for it self in saved time.

If the drive only contains data files such as your kma files, then copying them to another drive will work just as well. The only thing you gain by imaging data files is some compression (less space) on secondary drive.

Thanks for the response guys

The problem is not the hard drive, I am using an external 300 gig lacie for my show, and backing up to a 500 gig Maxtor, both external, using a laptop.
Everything is brand new. I am however copying large amounts from one drive to the other, karaoke is 180 gigs of data, and the DJ is about 80. When backing up i seem to lose a handful of songs each time and they are always different ones, so I will try the CRC Checker and see how that works as it is always a CRC error. Am I getting it right that there is another way beside the copy function called ghost mirror that is faster and you dont have the data transfer errors. Also, I have gotten WinRar and this has worked to unzip the files to another folder, but then I had problems copying those folders and su bfolder to another as mp3 and cdg files to then import. Still working on it. have a show tonight and sunday will give it a try again with the upgraded hoster first and then go from there. Let you know..........

I split these posts to a new Thread.

Forum rules call for having only one problem in a Thread. When you need answers to a different problem, post it as a new Thread. Those who have knowledge about that Thread Title will then see it and answer.

It also helps other visitors to find that Thread Title, which may be their problem also, by seeing it in the Title name.
