S-Video jack gives poor connection

My laptop, which I purchased from MTU about two years ago seems to have some wear from use, in the S-Video jack. Many times when I boot up the computer, the desktop will not show up on the TV.

I have to reboot, and hold the S-Video cable in place while it boots up. This works, and I have no problems the rest of the evening. However, I can see the time when this will not work for the entire evening, and the cable will come out of the jack.

I asked at a computer repair shop if I could have the jack replaced. He said that the jack is part of the motherboard, and I would have to replace the motherboard, and if I had to do that, I might as well replace the entire computer.

I hope he did not know what he was talking about. Did anyone else have a problem like this, and if so, how did you solve it? Can the jack be replaced or not?

Oxidization could be the problem. Contacts tend to get dirty. Go to an electronic supply shop and buy a can of contact cleaner. Spray it lightly on the male pin side and carefully plug and unplug the connection several times to clean the surfaces of both the plug and jack. Repeat a time or two to make certain all surfaces get cleaned.

With proper care, no harm should be done. If it doesn't remedy the situation, you're no worse off.

Works well with Mike jacks, RCA phono jacks, etc.

Here's a link to the Radio Shack on line page advertising TV tuner/contact cleaner for $9.39 a can. Item 64-4315.

They may have it in their retail stores.

Hope this gets it for you.

Beavis we're not interested in, or talking about the pen.

It's the spray can of contact cleaner just below it.

A can on spray cleaner will not hurt but I don't think it is his problem. I too have MTU's laptop and the S vedio plug comes half way out of the socket very easily if the computer is moved. You can remedy this by making the plug egg shapped very slightly so it fits more snug in the socket.
Normally I don't have that problem because I keep all the componets hooked up on a cart that I transport them with. The plug gets loose from constantly plugging and unplugging it.
The repair man is probably right. You can buy another connection cable easier if you damage the one you have.

What does that mean? The old fashioned way sometimes works too.

Give it a very very slight squeese with a plier.Too much and it wont fit anymore. Better than nothing. If you spoil it you have to buy another, it is much cheaper than buying a motherboard.
