Scratched CD+G

I have a few CD's that have a popping sound in them upon playback in Hoster. Sure enough, when I look at them they have a scratch in them. The odd thing is, when I play them in Microstudio or in my player, no popping sound. Only when converted to KMA. I have tried different compression and still the same result. I sure am glad that I got Hoster when I did because I never relized how bad my CD's I was beginning to have.

I guess the thing to do would be to backup the scratched original with Microstudio, then import to hoster using that backup copy

Re: Scratched CD+G

I tried that, both the original and the copy play fine in Microstudio and on the player but with Hoster it has pops. I am not complaining, I am just saying that a scratch gets a different sound in KMA vs. ORIG. I am a computer guy and know it is all digital and shouldn't be that way but it is.
Kinda strange.

Re: Scratched CD+G

You can break down the BIN to Mp3 + CDG (two files).

Play the mp3 in the Windows Media Player and listen for the "POPS."

If POPS are present, then you can use a Sound Editor, such as Cooledit, to clean up the anamolies.

Once Mp3 is edited, re-combine into Bin and re-import into Hoster.

Re: Scratched CD+G

They are really small pops, more like a scratched record. I just haven't heard that sound since the old album days. If you are singing, you really don't hear it that much. I just found it strange that when you play the CD you don't hear it only after KMA conversion.

Re: Scratched CD+G

Are you using the Compressor/Limitor or do you have it disabled? It is controlled in the Import Tracks tab "Change Settings" button just above the tracks window.

If you are using it, try increasing the compression to lower the peaks which are caused by the scratch.

Re: Scratched CD+G

I am not using compression. It is disabled. I didn't use it because I thought that all my songs were clean. I only have a few that have the problem. All seem to either have small scratches on the disk or the foil, on Sound Choice. Even if you try to take care of your CD's stuff happens.

Re: Scratched CD+G

perhaps try importing at a higher resolution.

Since it plays ok on microstudio maybe the wma needs that extra sound data to help mask the scratch

Re: Scratched CD+G

160 compression made it sound even worse.

Re: Scratched CD+G

Microstudio and your player are playing the songs back at 1x, so you are reading them into Hoster at a much higher speed, which is going to make the Scratch larger than it really is. What you can try is go to the Tools Menu\CD/DVD Drives Default command. At the bottom uncheck the Auto Select beside Reading Drive. Once this is done you can select a speed to the Right. You know the disc plays correctly at 1x, so you may just want to try importing it at that speed. You can try other speeds to see if you can find one that is faster, and works instead of having to wait for it to read in at 1x.

This should fix your problem.

Re: Scratched CD+G

I tried copying a CD with Microstudio at 1X, and in the song in question, it still had little pops after KMA conversion. Both the orig. and the copy play clean in Microstudio.

Re: Scratched CD+G

have you tried cleaning your discs with something like this :-

I have the manual version and they work a treat - well worth the investment.
Have fun
