WHEN I PLUG INTO MY SOUND SYSTEM I GET LOUD NOISE FROM THE COMPUTER. YOU CAN HEAR NOISE WHEN THE MOUSE IS MOVED AND EVERYTHING. IS THERE A GROUND PROBLEM?? OR SOMETHING ELSE I SHOULD DO TO ELIMINATE THE NOISE

Re: MTU Laptop Noise

Yes, the noise is a ground loop problem. My laptop had the same problem. Several others have reported the same RF noise. The solution is to plug your laptop power supply transformer into the AC source through a two pronged plug thus lifting the ground and isolating the laptop. Just MAKE SURE that all your other equipment is pluged into the same power line as your laptop. Otherwise you could have everything go up in smoke. Gary |

Gary:
Are you saying that every piece of equipment should be somehow connected to the same outlet? I use JBL EON15 powered speakers and I generally have those plugged into separate outlets than the outlet I use for my computer, mixing board, cordless mics, etc. It would be difficult for me to plug the speakers into the same outlet as the rest of the equipment. Equipment Grounding
Steve
Your equipment doesn't have to be connected to the same outlet, just the same power line. If the AC outlets are all on the same line going to the same (one) circuit breaker, then they are the same power line. This is important for cutting down electrical noise caused by ground loops. But when you lift the ground off of a piece of equipment, like your laptop, then you have the possibility of not only electrical noise but a difference in potential between the laptop and the other equipment that may be tied to a different power line, a different circuit breaker. If you use a product such as a Furman line conditioner, which has 8 outlets, you will only need to find one outlet wherever your show is, plus you can plug all your equipment into the conditioners and eliminate the possibility of damaging something.
