Exclamation Hoster vs Norton 360v5 & File Trusting.

Everyone, I had updated Vista Ultimate with two critical updates and I also undated my virus checker to Norton 360v5. Hoster stopped working. Really! I opened a ticket and received one email saying they had not heard of any problems. Nothing more! Hoster would choke on opening and take 5 minutes to load (or more). Once Hoster opened and you selected a song to play Hoster would take up to a full minute to run the song. I have more that 18,500 songs and do 8 shows a month so I was in a panic. I actually figured out what was wrong and I am passing it on. Norton 360v5 (previous versions were OK) checks to see if an unknown file is a “trusted” file. Hoster of course is not on its list and all the background checks were taking Hoster to its knees. I found the place where I could tell 360v5 that Hoster files were trusted files and Hoster started working perfectly. Here is what I did: I opened “Check Norton Tasks” (shows your CPU usage) and clicked on the CPU usage chart. This shows the files that are running (I made sure Hoster was running) and I clicked on the Hoster application. I then made it a “trusted” file. I am sure there are other ways to do this but this is the one that worked for me. I am positive this is the problem as I updated by backup computer to 360v5 and tested Hoster and it acted the same way as my main computer. Once I told Norton to “trust” Hoster all was well there also. (I will not go into how much trouble and expense I went through.) This works…Happy Hostering.

Thanks for letting us know that. It will be helpful if someone else installs Norton 360.

Norton 360 has TOO MUCH security and caused me numerous problems with Hoster on my Vista laptop also. Prior versions of Norton allowed you to remove it from "StartUp Programs", so it was not running in the background while doing Karaoke. I would then start Norton only when I got on-line for upgrades, etc.

I called them last year & they allowed me to downgrade & transfer my subscription from 360 to NIS, assuring me that version could be removed from "StartUp". That was NOT TRUE & Symantic had no idea how to turn off Norton. So, even though I had everything turned OFF, I would still get messages telling me that everything was turned OFF - DUH!!!!!!! I found the work around (for NIS) - under "Norton Tasks", turn ON "Silent Mode" (which can only be done for 1 day at a time). However, this STOPS everything from running in the background & STOPS all messages. I now do this before every Show!!!!

No problems with Hoster & Vista since then.

Re: Hoster vs Norton 360v5 & File Trusting.

I had trouble with McAfee when i first started using hoster on my laptop back in 2008. I had an extra subscription so i put it on my show laptop. I only go online to update. But it didn't take me long to remove it. It locked hoster up tighter then granny's girdle before sunday go to meeting. Took it off pronto, haven't had a problem since.

Re: Hoster vs Norton 360v5 & File Trusting.

Thanks for posting with a solution. I actually have never had a problem but only because I have no antivirus software on my laptop. I feared problems so just declared it a non internet pc. Do all my work on the backup and transfer over. There have been a few times I would haven liked to get on the internet so maybe I will give it a shot. Happy Days!
