SongDatabase Editting

As we know, when editting the songs in the database, Hoster will give you selections to pick from, be it title or artist(s). However, if the auto-fill has a misspelling, it won't let you add the correct data. For example, Dwight Yoakam's name comes up "Dwight Yoakum"; its "kam" not "kum". Is there a way of editting the reference file? Just curious.

Hey Dave,
It's not just the "reference file" (songs.mdb) that needs to be edited (which you can do with Microsoft Access. It's located in the C:\MTU\Hoster folder) ) but also the header information included each KMA flie must be changed as well. The best way to edit your songs databse is to use the "Edit Songs" feature in the Tools menu. This will change the songs.mdb and the header information. It's the only way to change the header information.

If you need more help just let us know!

When doing minor editing I've found it much easier to turn the auto-name thing turned off.

Dave,
You can override the auto-fill by just typing in what you want (I just checked and it does work) and ignoring the drop down list. Or as Sam said just turn it off. This will also correct MTU's local database by sending the information to them when you are on-line.

By the way you do not want to edit the database directly (with Access) because any changes you make there will be lost in next Rebuild.

Thanks Dale,
I did not mean to suggest editing the songs.mdb with Access, I only ment it is possible. I'll see that my explainations concerning Access and the songs.mdb are clearer form here on out. Thank you for jumping in and keeping me straight.

Sam,
I agree with you.

Jim

Yo Douglas, tried your suggstion...didn't work for me. I did in fact do an Access update, only because I know how to use it (not evrybody can, which is understood). Another example of nomenclatures not updating is the group "Shedaisy". Reference file shows it as "SheDaisy". There's got to be a way of correcting the reference file because even if you try to type in the corrct spelling, it won't let me. Hmmm...weird.

This is part of a learning process for MTU. When I say learning, I'm talking about the 2 way communication with the songs.mdb. This is a new process, and I'm sure it will take quite some time to get it all straight.

I noticed also that this also happens in the singers database entries. If you typed the wrong capitalization the first time, you can't correct it without removing the entry.

I did about 20 songs in the Edit Songs tool this afternoon when you brought it up, so I know it works. Did you try doing it with the Automatic-fill unchecked? I did mine with it checked but Marklwood suggested turning it off and I know that works too.
All I did was to do a search (with Artist turned on) for Dwight in the Edit Songs tool. Then highlight the first one and right click in the Artist block below the list. Wait a couple seconds (for the automatic fill list to complete) and type in the corrected name. For the rest I highlight the name again and Press Control C (for copy) then select the next song right click on the Artist again and press Control V to paste the new name in. Works like a charm.
By changing them in Access, the next time you have to Rebuild or Add Database all those changes will revert back to what is in the KMA header which doesn't get changed from Access.

Hi ddouglass

Yes you can edit and then write changes back to the header without loosing the changes you made in the database, But you gotta know what you do.

Joe....

You will have to tell me how you can write to the header in the KMA file? And don't tell me with a binary editor because 99.5% of the people here wouldn't know what one was or how to use it.I know there is know way within Hoster except to use the Edit Songs utility.
