Hoster 4.06 froze twice using laptop

Last night, my lower end laptop that has always played videos well with virtual dj and hoster, froze twice. I do have and need virtual dj minimized during the show, as I always have.

Also, I notice that when I move the cursor around in the playlist to a different song, that little hourglass comes up for a split second, almost like their is a real short waiting period before I should do anything else. Never noticed that before. The laptop is 1 gB memory ram and video card is 256 mB shared video ram, nVidea. Has anyone else noticed this very slight pause when relocating that blue line in the playlist.

The first freeze came up when I was sliding a song up on the playlist. I wondered if I was doing things too fast (interfering with that 1/2 second hourglass maybe). When hoster closed and I restarted, another set list appeared. It was one that I had previously loaded before the show on a second instance of hoster (was doing this to S+ a few ppl by digging up old playlists. But that screen was closed out when the show started. But that still was the playlist that came up when I restarted hoster after the freeze.

Second freeze occurred when I hit pause, waited a few seconds, and hit resume, hourglass came up and wouldn't go away. Upon restart, only part of the current playlist reopened. It was the first 10 singers that had already sung from that playlist. The playlist was much longer at the time of freeze-up. I think before the show I had opened and closed that instance by mistake with perhaps that 10 song playlist showing, somehow it remembered that list instead of what was on at the time of freeze up.

Any ideas?

Any comments?

What do ya think?

If it would have only been one freeze, I would have passed it off as a random nonre-occurring thing, but two in one night after years of having none at all seems odd.

Bryant, I am just chasing rainbows right now butt.....
Could you look at a registry value for me on the machine you are having trouble with? It is located in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

I have not had the trouble you are having in XP, but I have seen something similar in Vista. I am trying to narrow it down and need some data. I expect the value to be at 20mb, but it may be as high as 48mb.

Hey Bryant

I know how you feel, what I started to do is save that list before I start anything, just incase.

1 gig Mem. may not be enough Hoster & VDJ running, you need 2 gig + for a smooth operation.

What's you're internal Drv Rpm?

Joe.....

What parameter under MemoryManagement are you looking at? XP has several.

Sorry, that should have been:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\Windows

All I need is the 3 numbers at the middle of the string, but please just copy and paste the whole thing.

%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

I would expect to see different values depending on your system ram.

Should be there, it's the reg for the desktop heap, but I really don't think that would be the problem with only 3 or 4 windows open and I don't think it would have waited all this time to manifest.

I had a similar problem, with the singers db open.
I took madam's advice and located the singers screen at the the bottom of the screen with only the title bar showing. To display it, you just double click the title bar and the singers db screen goes full screen, double click again to put it back to the bottom of the screen. If you are running wmp 11, try rolling back to wmp 9.

Ya, I see. I am doing the singer's database thing, but I really don't use it that much on that machine as I was mostly "S+'ing" singers to fill the database. First time I had used that at as show. Wanted to test laptop operation on Hoster 4 with VDJ in background.

Was hoping for some good discussion on this forum (which we are getting) and am glad to see the comment on wmp11 vs wmp9. Might try that rollback as you advised.

One of my freezes was found to be when I hit pause, followed by a "Play" instead of resume, think I panicked and tried several buttons in a weird combination that created a freeze situation.

The other freeze may have been some random thing that stems from having VDJ minimized. I have also been noticing that when VDJ is minimized while playing a video, I can't feed hoster any info. I could before. I found the solution. Now, instead of having VDJ maximized on screen, I have it resized down just a little, and when I minimize it from that position, I can do things and put names in hoster playlist. I think now that most of my problem was simply because of having VDJ minimized from a maximized position.

I put this on the forum so those with VDJ and Hoster may coordinate their programs a bit better. It is also a bear trying to get laptops to run smoothly with VDJ as well.

I still do get that little 1/2 second long hourglass as I place the cursor on any playlist name. And that may be because when you do this, the order of singers has to adjust itself automatically. These little extra efforts from Hoster4 require additional resources over the older 3.xx versions.

The same laptop ran flawless last night at a 2 1/2 hour show. All conditions the same as the previous night, except I had minimized VDJ from a resized position, instead of minimized from a maximized position.

Would anybody have any explanation why that may have caused previous glitches between the two programs?

As I said, I am just chasing rainbows. The third SharedSection value is the size of the desktop heap for each desktop that is associated with a "non-interactive" window station. That space also has to include not only windows, but menus and memory hooks also. With all that is going on in the background, I just wanted to see if this value is different on the machines that are having problems. They may have installed something in the past that changed this value. Also, other programs can be using the user32.dll and using up the allocated space. Bryant said by making a change to the window size he corrected the problem. Do you see where I'm going here.

I am by no means an expert, but sometimes that helps to come at problems from a different angle.

Sorry to say it didn't but hoster 4.06 shut down on me tonight and when I started back up all that was there were songs that played.
this was on my show comp. the shutdown was due to me clicking on export in the singers DB by accident with a song playing opperator error .

I'm not arguing against it, just a different opinion.
Sure I see where you were going and do understand the value of tweaking this Reg item. Some viruses try to change this item to keep your machine from booting or to give you memory errors. I am not opposing your idea, sometimes its good to "chase rainbows" . It's surprising at how much runs under user.dll. You can find items associate with the dll by going to the CMD screen and typing "tasklist /m User32.dll". Works with any dll.
Later...

And now, thanks to you, I learned something new again today.
When this whole process started, I always assumed that if you run out of resources (memory in this case) you just throw more memory at it. With some research I found out that this is not necessarily the case. Now, with help from people like you, I have learned a LOT more about how all this works. Even if this has absolutely nothing to do with our problems in Hoster, I have been able to continue learning. I have always told my children that if you can learn just one thing each day, it is a good day.

Hi Bryant

Concerning the delete issue I’m having problems with in singer’s database.

I finally figured out how this happens, there are some singers that have 30 to 40 songs listed and sometimes I need to swoop a song with another brand or delete one that was selected by mistake etc.

When you do any sort title or artist and let say the song starts with the letter "A" and it's the first one on the top of the list highlight it and press delete it just reorganizes the list and the song doesn’t delete it deletes another song, at first I deleted three in the singers database before it would work after a sort.

So now I have to scroll down to find the song in the list then delete from there, but if you do any sort it will delete the wrong song and not the one you intended to delete.

I think this may be a Bugging Bug.

Concerning the way you are starting to use you’re VDJ is the same way I use mine and I’m not having any problems with the two.

I’m really buggin for the Venue feature to be implemented.
The more places you play the more crazy it gets.

Joe….
