Several questions

Hi everyone. I have several questions and I hope I get an answers to them. I know some of these questions are pretty basic but I am not an active KJ and only do a few gigs per year so I don't always keep up to date. I did try to find some answers by searching on the forum but they tend to be outdated.

Currently, I have Hoster 3.317 working well on my rackmount computer running XP and a cheap XP laptop. I have been thinking about making some changes to this setup. I am thinking of using my MacBook Pro running Vista instead of the old laptop and keep the rackmount.

From reading several threads, it seems that 4.04 is having issues with Vista. I was thinking of going with Vista on my Macbook Pro to run Hoster.

1. If I upgrade from current version to 4.x, how does the license work to transfer to the machines I have? Currently I have one on my rackmount, which I would like to keep, but want to transfer the other from my old laptop to the MacBook Pro. How can this be done? Because when I tried to install 3.317 on another machine, it said that all my licenses have been used and can not be installed again. Old days I had a floppy disk to transfer license but none of my new machines have floppy drive anymore. Does having two different OS have any affect?

2. I can't seem to easily find XP in the market today, thus the decision to go Vista. If I do that, my rackmount will remain XP and the laptop Vista. Is it a good idea to consolidate both to a single OS? If I consolidate both, would it be better to go with XP on both or Vista on both?

3. I couldn't find after search but I would assume that MacBook Pro running XP/Vista via Bootcamp and/or VMWare Fusion would work with Hoster? I have verified that the second monitor works fine under MacOS X so I am pretty sure it will work under Windows.

4. Should I wait for 4.05 before making the change?

Thanks in advance for answers.

Ben

The license is for two computers at a time. Starting with 4.0 you must uninstall online 1 computer before you can install on another. Not sure on this point but If you install 3.xx on another machine you will be stuck with it there as it can't be uninstalled online

Prevailing wisdom is that Vista is crap and unstable and is likely to remain that way for a while, So if you can get XP i'd say grab it. Other wise you can mix and match OS's, one doesn't effect the other

There was a thread here a year ago or so about running Hoster on Windows for Mac I don't recall if it worked or not.Probably just have to try and see.

Theres no advantage or disadvantage to this.

You are not "stuck" with any version or computer. MTU will give you a new registration number for a different computer. Put in a Support Ticket & just tell MTU what you want to do. They will issue you a new registration number.

This attitude is EXACTLY why online uninstalls are being implemented
The whole reason (starting with 4.xx) you can now uninstall online and move to a different computer is because too many people were wanting to install on other computers on a whim or worse, to scam MTU out of extra computer installs without payment.
The volume of these requests keeps MTUsupport from being able to attend to real problems in a timely manner.

At some point in time (I don't claim to know when) MTU will stop manually resetting registrations, except perhaps under extreme circumstances. Right now they do it out of the goodness of their heart, that doesn't mean they'll do it forever.

Instructions in Manual

Actually, I was just trying to make the point that you are NOT "stuck with" any version. I just finished reading the 4.04 Manual & the instructions on how to put Hoster on a new computer when an old one crashes & you can't uninstall on-line, are very clear in the Manual. You're right in that a support ticket is not necessary.

Thanks so much for the information.

So, just to be clear. If I purchase an upgrade to 4.x from 3.x, I get new code that allows me to install on two machines? Or do I need to have an older version installed before I can install it on the machine?

If I need to ask to deactivate, how do I do it? Ask the support at MTU or is there a web site I can do it automatically?

Well, as for the Mac, I am going to upgrade and see if it will work. I have everything already set up, just waiting for my Vista to show up. Once I get the Vista up under Boot Camp, I am going to install the latest Hoster and see if it will work. If it doesn't, back to my old laptop for the second license.

Thanks again for the replies.

You can install Hoster on two machines. You have to install Hoster 3.XX to use the upgrade regcode.

Go Here:

Once you get Hostor 4 on your machines, you just have to be online when you unistall and Hoster will be clesr to install on a different computer.
