MP3+G is a compression format for storing karaoke files on your computer. It actually is two files. The MP3 is the music (just like you would use for your audio only files). The second file is a the graphics for the lyrics and has a .CDG extension.
The songs are not cheaper and most of the people with this type have converted them from their discs to store back-ups and use them with the computer. A lot of the other karaoke programs out there have used this format for a long time. MTU developed their own format using a modified WMA format which also is a compression format and in my opinion is a better format for sound quality. I hate to say it and I may be wrong but I have my doubts about just how legal some of those huge numbers of song files are. There are some who have been in this business for a long time and may have collected that many, but there are just too many KJ's out there who share there music with groups of people. One buys a CD and suddenly they all have it. You can buy songs on the internet for downloading and usually those are zipped up MP3+G to make them smaller for downloading. However most do not have license from the producers to provide those files. I personally would not trust buying from anyone except direct from the individual producers themselves. Where to get them legitimately I couldn't tell you because I don't even venture into that. Everything I use comes from legally purchased CDG discs.

Caution: Personal Opinion.
99% of the people who have huge libraries like this are pirates. Ebay used to be rife with people selling hard drives loaded with 50, 75 or 100,000 songs. Thanks to honest KJ's most of those get shutdown soon after they are listed. I've seen a few websites dedicated to selling those hard drives and they don't usually stay up to long. This makes life difficult for the honest KJ's, the bars that hire them and the karaoke manufacturers - many of whom have shutdown or have had to scale way back on new stuff. Look at Sound Choice they used to have 4 or 5 new disks every month, sometimes twice a month, now were lucky if they have 1 new disk every other month. Here on the forums when I see someone say they've got all these songs but can't figure out some simple computer operation I usually assume piracy and don't offer any help. I don't accuse anyone directly without evidence - I just don't offer help. I know several KJ's who have been in this business since the beginning and who have only aquired fewer than 25,000 songs, so to see a newbie with 100,000 songs red flags sart flying. Someday the government will aggresively start going after these people, hopefully I can hang on that long. IMHO **************************** Recently on Ebay I purchased 6 CB manufactured SCDG's (about 3000 songs)for $120. I spent $40. for ripping software. This would be a good deal for newbies. It only netted me about 900 songs I didn't already have but it was still a good deal. Sam |
