copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

a friend of a friend tried to copy his songs to an ext. drive for a back-up purposes, and copying stops at a certain # of files..they said that when they tried to rebuild the song database they keep getting an error " not found " something to that effect..and also the 27k songs that he's got they all disappeared, i worked on it last night, and i managed to find 3k or so songs on diff. folders, i have never worked on w7 before, so i just gave up..i just asked him to maybe re-import all the disc back...

If the originals are not in the location they were in he moved instead of copied the files probably. I have seen that go awry too many times. Did you do a search on all drives for anything with a KMA extension?

this is what they told me, they hi-lighted some songs at a time from the int. drive and dragged it into the ext. drive, once they get around 200 songs they'll get an error..( bunch of # error code. ) he has an emachine with 2 int. drives, i searched for KMA ext. on both drives and i found a bunch of diff. files,( 2 hoster song files, mtu songs file, cd files, and music files.) and that's where i got some of the songs back..can't find the rest,..or i just don't know where to look anymore..i also t/off the uac that took me a while, MTU's how to was easy enough to follow, except he's laptop doesn't have the same dropdowns or wordings ( so to speak ) to follow the direction..

Re: copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

If they used the Left button when dragging then Windows chooses what function to do and it probably chose to Move instead of Copy. WHen they encountered the error then all those files are lost. Thank you Microsoft.
Have you tried a restore?
Also check to see if they have done the Windows 7 required changes for Hoster - http://www.mtu.com/upgrades/hoster/windows7-changes.htm

If you can restore them Make sure that next time they highlight, right click in the highlighted area and choose copy, then go to the desired folder right click in the empty space and choose paste from the list. This is the safest way to copy files.

Re: copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

sorry it took me a while to respond, i'm updating all my pc's and laptops ( 8 ) including my netbook, and i got a few updates especially the ones i don't use all the time, and syncing my ipod with itunes at the same time..but anyway..i dont really know how they did it, when he came to my house last night he has a printed copy of all the changes need and he said he did all of them, except for the uac..i tried the system restore, but it doesn't have a calendar like xp, all i saw was a system restore of windows updates, and i tried the dates in which he had the laptop working, and it didnt do any good..i even suggested of downgrading his w7 to xp i'm not sure if that could even be done..now i know how some of the w7 users felt..FRUSTRATING..I'M GLAD I DONT HAVE W7

THe UAC is probably the most important one. Turn off the UAC and I bet you will find all those files. I thought of that first but thought maybe you had helped him set it up so should have been done. Windows 7 & Vista will hide files from programs when you copy them or move them by putting them in hidden folders and not let the program see them. Piss poor way to do things and it took awhile for MTU to figure this out.
There is no way to actually downgrade Windows 7 to XP without doing a complete reload.

Re: copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

when he came to my house last night he had a printed copy of MTU's necessary changes and he said that he did all of them, when i asked him if he turned off the uac, he said he didnt know how to, so i followed MTU's instructions, and it took me a while to figure it out due to a diff. set-up ( wordings ) on his emachine ( laptop ), i then closed and re-started,after turning off the uac istill didnt do me any good,, i stil couldn't find the rest of his songs. ..

Re: copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

Be sure his Windows Explorer is set up to show all folders. Tools/Folder Options/View - Show Hidden Files and Folders. Also uncheck Hide known extensions and Hide Protected operating system files.
Could be that search couldn't find them because of that.
There is also a setting if I remember to allow Hoster to see and use the files but I don't know where to find that. I don't have Windows 7 either. Maybe Roy can help with that.

Re: copying kma files to ext. hhd. on w7

just got done talking to him and he's got everything worked out, what happened was he had moved all his songs to the ext. drive, the songs that i was able to find were the ones he imported which was put into dif. files (I don't know how he did it ) and the usb port where he had plugged the ext. drive went bad, and he used a diff. usb port and all his songs was in it...he's now rebuilding his song database.thanks for all the suggestions...
