Hey All,
Just a note from the UK.
As a part time KJ/singer who mainly specialises in private functions as opposed to bars etc. I have built up a good haul of legit CDG's over the years, having, complete collections from most of the BIG players in the industry, and costing mega bucks.
Of late I have had people GIVE me DVD's containing every kind of karaoke disc, mainly in the MP3+G format
These guys don't see anything wrong in downloading or sharing their collections, they've been doing it for years, from school even, sharing and copying tape cassettes, videos and CD's.
It's part of life to them and they don't do it for profit.
Most of them sing at karaoke, the odd one does a karaoke show now and then, for peanuts.
The point I am making is that these guys don't see that they are hurting the genuine KJ, it's all a bit of fun to them.
But there are so many dishonest KJ's out there anyway, working for unscrupulous club owners that on the whole karaoke is looked upon as par with strip joints and tattoo parlours.
One club I attended recently, which has been putting artistes and karaoke on for years, turned out to not even have a music license when the police raided over Health and Safety issues.
I also saw a couple of items on Ebay recently for Karaoke players with 35000 song data bases (discs not supplied), enough said.
I am afraid it's all around us, mainly brought about by the exorbitant prices charged by disc producers/suppliers and the attitude of the industry in general.
Regards from across the pond.
Garry
