Cupping a mike in no way reduces the mike element area exposed to the sound when done in a normal manner. They'd have to all but close the mike completely off to do that.

Agree the added amplification gained makes some male singers(those with a bass to baritone range) sound like they're in a barrel, because of the added reverb cupping generates.

We have a regular in our private karaoke group that has such a soft voice that we've taught her to cup the mike. It has a necessary amplification effect for singers like her, and allows her to sing in a relaxed manner.

No one shoe fits all.
