Possible audio hardware accellerator problem.
Click START, RUN, type in DXDIAG. O.K., then click on SOUND 1 TAB, and if the HARDWARE SOUND ACCELLERATOR slider is all the way to the right, move it two notches to the left for starters, and EXIT.
See if that has any effect.
