And to top all that I have another set of drives in the house computer that are duplicates of the first three.
I think I may have a trust issue or two.

Have you looked at DROBO yet. Rock solid & Future proof. Very happy with mine so far. I've had it about 6 months now. Plus you can use those old hard drives without worries.
