Reinstalling the drive is a good idea. I'll give it a go.
MTU installed everything so I assume the update configuration is correct and excludes hardware updates. By posting here I was hoping someone had information such as "the manufacturer has a hardware update to address a software change Micrsosoft did", but apparently the problem isn't that simple. I am reluctant to start changing things on my own as 'shot in the dark' attempts to fix it as everything should already be correct and such attempts will likely only break other things. Ah well.
