I forgot to mention to not do the Hardware updates through Microsoft. Half the time they are not the right ones for your computer. Best bet for those are the computer manufacturer. In the case of the MTU computer, look on the bottom to find out who made it and what model it is.
Also, try removing the drive from the computer. You do this by right clicking on "My Computer" and go to the Properties. Then go to the Hardware tab abd click on Device Manager. Find the DVD drive, right click on it and remove it. Then reboot the computer. This will find it and re-install it again. Don't know if this will work but it might get it going again.
