It actually depends on how the choices are set. You can have it not change until you reboot, apply now, or ask you if it is changing resolutions. I too have had to do as Mark did of going into Safe Mode to reset it. If you are not that computer savvy as some here aren't then instead of thinking it through they panic and blame you for breaking their computer.
Either kjunkies has a very old laptop with very low resolutions or his video drivers have failed and all he is getting is "Standard" VGA.
