It may be the power drain as Bryant pointed out in post #5.

I don't know if this would help but you can get USB hubs that you can power with a separate power pack, then plug your external drive into that.

Other than that, just to double check that your files haven't got corrupted make a copy of your mdb file and save it temporary to say your desk top. Then copy a few of the kma files that are showing as garbled back to your c. drive, then rebuild your data base with these few kma files and see if they are still garbled. If they play right then I think you can say that it is the power problem, you may need to get a hard drive with it's own power supply.

You can copy & paste your temporary saved mdb from the desktop back to it's original place and not have to rebuild the data base.
