MTU recommends "Custom" rather than just "automatic" to be sure you get everything. I'm not good at explaining .NET Framework, but it is from Microsoft also. Your machine must already have 1.0 and 2.0 and then it needs 3.0, but not 3.5. Also, check the "Troubleshooting" section of the Manual. That may also help.
Try all the above first. Changing the graphics card from 32 to 16bit was only suggested to Vista users. I don't think anyone had to do that on XP
