This usually (lately anyway) hass been a case of out of date drivers for the video card. Go to the laptop maker's web site and see if they have updates for the video and audio cards drivers.
The other thing may be the amount of memory and speed of the laptop.
If you did the Auto updates that is not all you need to do. You need the custom updates from Microsoft's Update page. These will include SP3 (XP) or SP1 (Vista), Internet Explorer 7, etc.
