Backing off on the hardware acceleration (I went all the way back for the time being) appears to have done the trick (in the limited testing I've done so far). I will begin adjusting the acceleration upwards until I find the 'break' point.
Just a note: this appears to be a Windows 2000 only issue. Since I have the original drive that still has Windows 98 SE loaded on it w/ the drivers for the same video & sound cards that are loaded for the Windows 2000 drive. When I ran the same test under Windows 98 SE, I didn't see the problem.
