If the files were actually deleted on your external dirve it may be possible to recover them using some of the "undelete" utilities available. I'm not sure if it will work or not but I would give it a try. Also do not write any more data to the drive where the files were deleted because that could make recovering the lost files more difficult. Here is a link I saw for one the those utilities.
