What was clipping? Your sound card? Your Mixer? Your amp?

If the line levels and volume are turned up on your soundcard you should have plenty of headroom.

I don't use my laptop for shows but I do use an external USB soundcard on my desktops mostly just because in my opinion the onboard sound on motherboards tend to not be the best quality. A subjective opinion to be sure. It's also necessary if you are trying to run something in the background like Winamp.
