To answer yoiur question, under normal circumstances, reinstalling Hoster does not cause the loss of your KMA files, and reinstalling may or may not solve the problem.
That said, as many problems Vista has been causing I wouldn't want to take the responsibility of telling you to go ahead and reinstall unless you would take the precaution to get a USB hard drive and back those files up before doing anything.
You need that at the very least anyway in the event of a crash.
Ideally, you should have a back up pc with everything on it, or use something like Norton Ghost and have your entire hard drive cloned to an external drive, for immediate recovery.
Some may disagree with me, but that's my take on it as erratic as Vista has been performing.
