Many laptop sound cards are just not capable of handling music quality sound. I have a Sager laptop that distorts everything. If you have tried looking for updated drivers from IBM for your sound card then the cure for it may be to use a USB external soundcard as some others have described in these forums.
Your WMA+G to KMA conversion problem I can't duplicate as mine work fine. Only thing I can suggest is if you haven't upgraded to Media Player 10 or 11 try that. It has surprisingly cured other audio problems before.
