I don't think it is only with external drives...
I experienced this exact problem with internal hard discs. The problem may have something to do with a timeout being exceeded before the song loads but it does happen on internal drives as well. Now that I think about it, the problem did seem more pronounced when you just repeatedly hit the play next button, verified the song started correctly, stopped it and then started the next song in the list. After about 10 to 20 songs Hoster would shut down.
