Not sure if your post mentions what sound card you are using. If it is Sound Blaster Audigy, you need to install only the drivers. Additionally, when using Window XP, you need to go to compatibility and use Windows 98. If you haven't done this, you need to installed the proper ASPI drivers.
Also, since you got Windows XP, check the error log, that sometimes help to isolating the problem. Lets us know how you doing.
