My Experience --

Dell Laptops -- 3 Prong to 2 Prong adapter

HP/Compaq - Shielded Audio Cable

Tower/Desktop - Shielded Audio Cable

Bill @ ESC can help w/the shielded Audio Cable (mine sums the L/R into 1 feed) -- 1/8 Stereo to XLR (M)
