Re: How do I change a backup computer?

Touchy subject.

We can't reveal our security methods or we aid "the enemy" who is trying to crack our secuity all the time. I'll try to give you some guidelines to help you understand what you can/can't do without our help.

The security consists of two parts:

1. Code embedded in Hoster's .exe program
  • It verifies it is still running on the same computer to prevent moving the .exe to another computer and running it.
  • It is tolerant of some changes to the "fingerprint". You can change some components and it will still run without reinstalling.
  • If you change too much, the existing install will refuse to run, requiring installing and doing a new registration.
  • You can re-install on the same computer an unlimited number of times if nothing has changed.

2. Scripts and Databases at our web site
  • When you register it verifies if this is a pre-existing registration.
  • It SHOULD BE tolerant of some changes to the "fingerprint". You will be able to change the same components as above and it will allow registering. Currently the script is very unforgiving. If any fingerprint item has changed it creates a new record, or refuses to allow this registration. We have relative few problems with this so far, and the bug will be found and fixed as soon as we release our new on-line store.
  • If the Registration Code already has two registration records in our web database, registration is denied and you will see this page.

Our goal is to improve the security means so that you can "Transfer" your Registration Code from one computer to another, in the event you need to replace your computer. The problem will be handling the situation where your existing Hoster computer has died and Hoster cannot be "uninstalled and transferred".
