Karaoke Players are single function black boxes that only play the CDG format designed in the mid '80s. TrueType fonts weren't in general use then. These single fuction products require logic and firmware to draw every character, and I expect "extraneous" characters were simply left out to keep cost down. Today, some players may display other codes, but if you design for them, otehr players won't show them, displaying the song differently than you expect.
Experiment with the other characters and see if they appear on other Karaoke Players. It would be interesting to start a Thread with different Karaoke Player models and what characters they support.
