A cloning program will copy a cdg even if the drive is incompatible. MTU and most of the reputable cdg copying & playing programs have to load an aspi driver and they are compatilbe only with drives that are truly cd+g compliant. (they have to have the ability to read the r-w tracks.)

The only drive I would recommend for this personally is the Plextor. and for me right now it is the plextor 708a. (dvd also) because mtu is planning on adding support for dvd & vcd's to their programs.

a Teac drive will in most cases work, but for the price and the quality and durability I only recommend the plextor.

I don't work for MTU, but have been using their products for a year now, and Boy do they rock.
