Equipment Grounding

Your equipment doesn't have to be connected to the same outlet, just the same power line. If the AC outlets are all on the same line going to the same (one) circuit breaker, then they are the same power line. This is important for cutting down electrical noise caused by ground loops. But when you lift the ground off of a piece of equipment, like your laptop, then you have the possibility of not only electrical noise but a difference in potential between the laptop and the other equipment that may be tied to a different power line, a different circuit breaker.
