You don’t tell us the EXACT wording of the errors you are getting, nor your computer configuration. This is very important to fine the right solution.
Writing error are usually associated, not always, with buffer underruns.
Yes, your Plextor 16/10/40a has built-in burn proof technology. On the other hand, the burner only comes with a
2MB buffer and a slower 140ms average random access speed.
These numbers are little low and high, respectively
When using a burner with those specification
you must have a quick system that can feed your current programs and the burner’s buffer a sufficient amount of data to keep the flow of data or burning is interrupted,
even with Burn-proof technology, which can pause the burning process to catch up with the buffer.

These operations require FEWER resources than duplicating whole disks, hence, your higher success ratio.
