It sounds like you have projector only selected.
With your converter connected hold down the windows key again and tap the "P" key to see if you get the the the 4 boxes back, and select disconnect projector. Then repeat the windows key+p but make sure to only select the "extend" option.

I'm not familiar with Windows 8 so don't know if you can bring up the screen settings window by right clicking on the desktop and select " screen resolution" from the fly out window as you would with Windows 7.
Then check it is showing screens 1 & 2 there then select the individual screens and check what screen resolution is showing for each and that the dropdown box for Multiple displays shows as "Extend these Displays" if it shows anything other than that select it from the dropdown list and press apply and OK.

See how you get on with that.
