EXACT issue for my ripped videos in mpg format for almost a year on one of my computers and
NO ONE could find a solution, converting to avi didn't help on my home ripped video mpgs plus is deteriorated the sound and video quality in the conversion process, drivers were always up to date. Finally found a codec setting on accident that didn't look like it related to anything and had to make sure the extended monitor was at highest setting as fas as DPI settings - that particular computer is set to 1280x800 (highest), anything lower would always show black screen during my mpg videos on the extended screen - ALL other videos played fine.
I will try to find the exact settings in the ffdshow video settings and send them your way.
