I don't think it would be direct X.
What version of Windows media player do you have installed ?

Just try this first Open C:/MTU/Hoster folder and delete the songs.mdb file. Then make sure your external drive is connected first then restart Hoster, it should start rebuilding the database from scratch which depending how many files you have can take a little time. After it finishes Hoster will open as normal. If the same problem exists at least we know it's not anything to do with the rebuild

I can't think of anything else at the moment perhaps others have some ideas.
