Change hard drive letter
I have 2 external hard drives. One was letter F and is now G. I would like to change it back, but can't find in XP how to do it. Anybody know?
Thanks |
These are the steps on how to change a drive letter for a drive (hard drive or CD-R) under XP or 2000. Sometimes when using USB drives, they can randomly change the letter when you plug the drive in. This can allow you to change the letter of the drive back to what your Hoster Database was originally built from, without having to rebuild your database.
Left Click Start Menu\Settings\Control Panel\ Double click on Administrative Tools Double click on Computer Management Under Computer Management, left click on Disk Management. Right click on the Drive that you want to change the drive letter for and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...". This will then open a dialog box, that will allow you to select the Drive. Once the drive that you want to change is selected, click the Change Button. You will now see another box pop up, that shows a Pull down menu on the right hand side. Select the drive letter that you want to change this drive to. Once you have done this, then click OK. You will see a dialog box pop up asking you to confirm with the following message: "Changing the drive letter of a volume might cause programs to no longer run. Are you sure you want to change this drive letter?" Yes or No? Click YES. Now close out of all other programs and your drive will now have the correct drive letter. This will do it, it is from MTU faq .Bob |
I spent over two hours yesterday trying to find instructions on how to do that. I thank you very much for your help!!

External HD user, better get used of doing this " change Harddrive assigned letter " thing. This will happen a lot if you start your computer with without those External HD attached on boot-up. Remember the assigned drive letter for each HD.

Once in a great while I do forget and plug in another USB drive that steals the assigned letter first and I have to use that procedure to change back however. |
I assigned my external HD with fixed letter and easy for me to remember. My NO. 1 HD with hoster kma files and other karaoke files was assigned Drive R and a second HD if needed for my musics and others, Drive S. So even I have six attached external drive (ex. DVD writer, flashdrive and other USB drive) it will not used or bump my karaoke drive and my music drive. Assigned a higher letter to your HD. And even I connect my karaoke drive and music drive to other my computer (back-up), I make sure it has the same drive letter.
