Legal or Not?
 

I have a question that I hope someone here has had experience with.

If a KJ has legally bought all his disks, but a singer wants to use their
own burned disk because he doesn't have the song they want, can the KJ get into any trouble for allowing the disk if it turns out to be an illegal
download?

not using hoster !

hoster imports on the fly and then deletes the file automatically.

ps: i wouldnt play any burned disk from any patron. just originals.

As long as you import only the song they want using the CDG button on the main screen of Hoster. As Beavis said it is imported and then deleted after it has been played. And even if your singer is a regular, don't import their whole disc permanently unless they are giving or selling you the original.

By reading your complete post, I see that you are asking if you could get in trouble if you ADD a Trk, via the CDG BUTTON (NOT IMPORT), from a Singer's Disc that is not an ORIGINAL DISC FROM THE MANUFACTURER.

Unless the Singer admitted that the NON-ORIGINAL disc was not a COPY of an ORIGINAL DISC that he/she owned, how would you have FIRST-HAND knowledge that the NON-ORIGINAL Disc was, in fact, obtained in a manner other than from an OWNED Disc. (Sound familiar - kill the messenger not the message...or Let's hold the Venue responsible for what a contractor, aka...the KJ, does.)

I suppose you could make a GOOD-FAITH effort to ask if the SINGER "Owned" the ORIGINAL or ORIGINALS, if it was a PERSONAL Disc with several Songs from several discs.

But, you could always make a note of the Disc and purchase one or REMOVE the CDROM so that it is impossible to use a Singer's Disc...as I know some KJs have done.

i had a singer last saturday that wanted to sing a track from a DK cd. she first asked me if i have DK brand cd's i do but i didnt have the song she wanted, she asked me if could import a song , from her burned disc, i said i could, but i wouldnt ..i told her to bring the original next time...

If you import their song from a copy instead of the original that is ok. It isn't your responsability to make sure they own the original and even if they don't own it you will not be the one in trouble.
Many people, my wife included create custom discs to take to shows (other than our own) because I don't feel like lugging around 550+ CDs so she can pick out which one she wants to sing from. Besides I don't like the way some KJs handle their CDs (and mine).:t
So Billyo it is ok to use someones copies, but I do reserve the right to refuse but that is usually because the disc is badly scratched or soaked in beer.

well one of the reasons i didnt do it beside the reason above was, i tried to import a burned cd from a customer at one time, i keep getting " cd/dvd not ready, please.insert a disc"..i dont get these msg. if i use the original..

Agreed, that is one of the reasons too. Some think they know how to copy CDGs and don't!:e

In the U.S., technicly probably yes. You could use the burn't copies (which many people use so the KJ can't ruin their originals), but if you were called on it by the music police, you have to be able to produce the originals.

Now since in the U.S. there is no music police at this time I would not be overly concerned with it.

In reading posts from Canadian KJ's in other karaoke forums it's my understanding that Canada is a bit more aggressive in fighting piracy, so they have to be a bit more careful about having originals available if they get called on it.
That's my understanding anyhow.

As was pointed out, Hoster was designed with the Add Track CDG Button to allow you to TEMPORARILY import a track from a Singer's disc to the Play List, even move it into your Rotation Order, then after it plays, Hoster automatically deletes it. This is legal. All you have to worry about is if the singer's disc will/won't read. If it is a CDRW disc, it probably won't.

If instead you go to the Import CD Tracks screen, and import it as a KMA file, you are illegal and can loose all your computers, discs, speakers, even your car. That's why MTU added the CDG button to keep you legal without your having to worry about it at a show. :w
